Welcome Messages

João Gabriel Silva

Challenge and the responsibility will define this first World Health Summit to take place in Portugal. The challenge for Coimbra is to make a significant contribution to the design of effective mechanisms for increasing the provision of high-quality health services to areas of the world where they’re inadequate or nonexistent. The responsibilities involve confirming Coimbra as a center of creation and disseminating knowledge regarding health.

This event will move beyond just proposing solutions towards a more integrative and inclusive approach. In it, special guests, speakers, experts, participants, social communicators, and figures from civil society will work together to identify sustainable responses that are also widely executable.

History shows that we are capable of finding new paths, uniting people and ideas, and developing new alternatives. Portugal has always had – and will continue to have – the capacity to kickstart new trends, spread good practices and generate new concepts.

In a world shaped by the velocity of change, this event will alert us to an impending need – to find new answers to old problems. Technology and novelty are important allies on this journey.

We are living in a unique era. One in which paradigms are being overturned and new planetary dynamics are being established. Portugal has the opportunity to be part of this history, and to present distinct ways of thinking that will influence healthcare in the future.

Together, we can overcome great challenges!

Fernando de Jesus Regateiro

As Co-President of the World Health Summit Regional Meeting 2018, it is an honor to welcome you to Coimbra in the same year that the M8 Alliance celebrates its 10th birthday!

The University of Coimbra and the Coimbra Hospital and University Centre are the hosts of this important meeting, which is taking place in Portugal for the first time. We are very committed to playing a major role in Global Health as members of the M8 Alliance, an extensive global network of leaders that promotes the development of innovative solutions and effective approaches to Global Health challenges in a changing world.

The World Health Summit Regional Meeting 2018 will provide an interdisciplinary forum for the discussion of themes such as the management of infectious diseases, governance for health equity in low- and middle-income countries, opportunities and challenges in translating innovation into healthcare, and adapting biomedical education to a changing world.

The strong representation on the part of nations belonging to the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) is explained by the close bonds that tie Coimbra to each of them. At this World Health Summit Regional Meeting, we intend to promote the joint development of new approaches and establish fruitful collaborations with both our CPLP partners and our international partners.

It has been a privilege for us to have the opportunity to organize the World Health Summit Regional Meeting 2018 in Coimbra.

We hope to honor the purpose of this global health event by engaging participants and prestigious leaders from a wide range of areas and geographies in a broad, intense and fruitful discussion.

Hosts

University of Coimbra

The University of Coimbra is the oldest university in the country, and for centuries it was the only university in Portugal. The history of higher education in Portugal is bound closely to the history of this historic center of learning.

Founded in 1290 by King Dinis in Lisbon, it was permanently settled in Coimbra in 1537, by order of King João III, after a period of migration between these two cities. Initially planned to work in Sofia Street, opened specifically to accommodate it, near the Monastery of Santa Cruz, it was in the Royal Palace of the “Alcaçova”, later the Palace of Schools, that all Faculties of the University of Coimbra - Theology, Canons, Law and Medicine – began their work in 1544. This is the image recorded in the Portuguese collective imagination, indelible mark of the city and its University ever since.

For centuries the city and the University were shaped in a deep symbiotic relationship, clearly visible in our days when we appreciate the relationship between the various cores of Alta (higher city).

The Palace of Schools, historic center par excellence of the University, holds a part of the whole that constitutes the University - here we perceive the traditions and mystique that makes it unique in the world. Inseparable from the city that hosts it, one feels the legacy of centuries, which projects itself in time, connecting the past and the future.

The College of Jesus is the oldest Jesuit College in the world, created here in 1542. It became the teaching space of sciences at the University of Coimbra after the Studies reforms, driven by the Marquis of Pombal in 1772. It is now one of the major references in what relates to the History of Science in Portugal.

In June 2013, UNESCO classified the University of Coimbra as World Heritage Site, for its unquestionable value for the History and Portuguese Culture – thus rewarding the effort and dedication of those who every day works to preserve, enhance and especially share its heritage with the World.

Young Physician Leaders, Coimbra, Portugal

Effective healthcare institutions need effective leaders. The issue of developing leadership qualities among health professionals, however, is often neglected, with many young professions having to learn their leadership skills almost by trial and error as they are handed positions of responsibility.

Although incorporating leadership training programs into the medical curriculum is lately gaining in importance, in practice too few countries are actually providing such training. To contribute to building capacity in this area, IAMP launched its Young Physician Leaders (YPL) program in 2011 in partnership with the World Health Summit and the M8 Alliance of Academic Health Centers, Universities and National Academies.

In the framework of this initiative, IAP for Health is seeking for candidates to participate in a regional program to be held from April 17-19,  2018, during the World Health Summit Regional Meeting in Coimbra, Portugal.

Program

Articulated in two parts, a specific leadership development program followed by participation as special guests at the World Health Summit Regional Meeting, the successful candidates will be exposed to an outstanding scientific and policy program attended by a global group of medical and scientific professionals. The program will take into account the lessons learnt from the previous YPL sessions in Berlin.

Candidate Profile

We are seeking to identify a maximum of 10 outstanding young physicians from Portuguese speaking countries who are currently in the process of establishing and developing their careers. The program seeks to select a diverse group from multiple specialties and career interests, including but not exclusive to research area and diversity of geographic location. The opportunities for sharing experiences across this international lens are unprecedented.

Candidates must show great promise for leadership in their chosen careers. They should be enthusiastic, with outstanding communication skills and the ability, desire and personality to represent the medical profession well when interacting with the outstanding professionals from multiple sectors who will be attending the World Health Summit Regional Meeting. We especially encourage the nomination of women.

Note that the workshop will be held in English, so candidates should be able to express themselves well in this language.

Application

IAP member academies, members of the M8 Alliance and other bona fide medical institutions in target countries without academies are invited to nominate a maximum of two eligible physicians under 40 years of age with demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in clinical medicine, medical education, public health, or health policy and who show significant promise for leadership in their fields in the future.

The deadline to submit nominations online is Friday February 16, 2018.

Network

The Young Physician Leaders initiative aims to convene a group of diverse specialties and origins. To date, 131 YPL have been trained. Their details can be found in the dedicated YPL Directory (www.iamp-online.org/ypl-directory)

Partners

The IAP for Health Young Physician Leaders Program 2018, Coimbra, Portugal is organized in partnership with Coimbra Health, formed by the University of Coimbra and the Coimbra Hospital and University Centre (CHUC). It has a special collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra.
